I want to take a break from dispensing wisdom to share a bit about writing. I love it. Writing is a release for me. As the postscript for each of my weekly missives, I sign off with scribendo cogito. That is part of the Roman proverb, docendo disco, scribendo cogito, or “I learn by teaching, think by writing.”
I do not consider myself a teacher. That was my wife’s profession, and she was (and is) excellent at it. I simply do not have the patience or fortitude to be a teacher of her caliber. But I can write, which is why I seek teachers to help me better understand the wisdom of the ages, the issues of our time, and the history to see all of that in some rational context.
That is why I maintain the Copy Book Warrior website as a platform to tee up my ideas. Many of you tell me each week how much you appreciate what I write. It is very gratifying. After all, there are writers who are far more interesting to read, and certainly more learned in the issues I care about. But like you, I learn from others and try to relate what I glean in ways that make some sense in a world with much need of rational thinking.
That said, I am opinionated. Moreover, I subscribe to a world view that is conservative in nature, believes in objective truth, and eschews nonsense that such does not exist. I write from that perspective. And I know many of you appreciate that, even if you disagree with me.
Now then, the rest of the story. This website is something I must finance. I do so willingly, whether I sell enough books or not to keep it alive. If you want to help, however, buy a book.
To incentivize that, I’ve dropped the price for an autographed copy of Desert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in First Gulf War by 13.5 percent. Just click on the book title. Call it my personal war on inflation. Well, maybe that and the fact I have 34 copies ready to mail out and would love to sell them before 11 November. Allow about four days in the mail, by the way. Speaking of which, the book is a great present to a veteran you know and love. Buy him or her one and I will personalize it as you want for a Veterans’ Day gift.
Besides, it will help me continue to share my thoughts with you each week in my Copy Book Warrior update. I love to do this. And even if you don’t buy a book, I will continue.
After all, “I think by writing.”
