Like many voters today, I’m deeply troubled about the direction of our country. We’re simply on the wrong track. Our economy is a mess because we’ve voted for people who constantly manipulate the free enterprise system. Most of them have a Robin Hood complex, whereby they “rob from the rich to give to the poor.” The hero of Sherwood Forest is a myth. So is the notion that you can tax your way to prosperity and also avoid financial collapse. It’s coming. Both parties are guilty of this, but the Democrats are addicted to the behavior. They are in a league of their own. Debating with Democrats about controlling spending is like a wolf and a sheep discussing what’s for lunch.
The same can be said about dealing with illegal aliens. Our border is in chaos. That defies elaboration, but let’s try. Virtually anyone who wants to get into America by breaking our laws as their first official act can do so without fear we’ll do anything to stop them. The huge number of “gotaways,” the illegals that have entered the country undetected, is disgusting. Since 2023, of the more than 8.6 million people who illegally entered the US under President Joe Biden’s administration, nearly 1.6 million are “gotaways.” That means they’re here among us, unaccounted for and likely participating in criminal activity that threatens our system of law and order.
And what of national security and foreign policy? The war in Ukraine could spill over into a wider conflict involving NATO. Moreover, even if you support Ukraine, and I surely do, our policy to help them prevail could not be more illogical. It’s as if the Biden Administration wants to help them lose slowly, even as Russian manages to skirt the sanctions regime that NATO and the US putatively put in place. The Middle East is no better, and probably poses a greater threat to the US than Russia’s naked aggression against a sovereign state. The Biden regime’s on again, off again meddling in Israel’s efforts to destroy the despicable Hamas threat amounts to national security malpractice. The muscles in Biden’s mouth pull against each other as he uses both sides to communicate diametrically opposed ideas. One side says Israel has a right to defend itself, but the other side will not allow Israel to do so in a manner that will be successful. This war would have ended months ago if Biden had shown the kind of leadership needed to deal with terrorists. Kill them. Death is all they understand. And utopian ideas like a two-state solution amount to national security alchemy. It won’t work any better than trying to turn copper into gold.
I could go on. Using tax dollars to create winners and losers in the energy business; foisting politically correct propaganda on our school children in the name of DEI; using the same pronoun nonsense in the military that has crushed recruiting young men and women to pursue a career in the service; and inaction on shoring up the Social Security and Medicare programs. The neglect and irresponsibility are circumambient. And voters have themselves to blame for that.
Sadly, our politics are more focused on personalities that policies. The beauty contest is actually quite ugly. We have people vying for office who act more like they are running in a high school election than one that will determine the future of our nation and world. I long for the day when a candidate will say this to me:
- I will advance and secure a balanced budget provision in the US Constitution.
- I will advocate for term limits in Congress.
- I will rebuild the US military to be the most formidable and lethal in the world to deter aggression.
- I will get the Federal government out of the business of interfering with state and local policies.
- I will hog-tie the bureaucratic regulatory state that stifles free enterprise.
- I will abolish the Departments of Education (state and locals do this work anyway), Energy (except for nuclear regulation), Homeland Security (give the responsibility to the Pentagon), and the EPA (States are better on the environment anyway) as well as the host of hanger-on agencies that do nothing of value.
- I will announce that the US will build a new UN headquarters in Iran. The New York site will be auctioned off and applied to our national debt.
- I will abolish the student loan program. It does nothing but increase tuition anyway.
- I will deport all illegal aliens in the US whenever they are identified.
- Any country that commits espionage or intellectual property theft on the US will be subjected to a 100 percent tariff on all imported goods until further notice. That will get their slimy attention.
That’s what this wonk would do to address the woes.
