Maybe you have taken note.  Those on the far left of the political spectrum in America are unhappy.  No, actually they are apoplectic.  They are in high dudgeon having lost to President Donald Trump a second time.  Moreover, he defeated yet another Democrat female candidate.  This first one, Hillary Clinton, was simply disliked by voters.  The second, Kamala Harris failed to impress them.

Despite the insufficiency of their candidates, the far left is wandering in the political desert.  They have no effective leaders following recent defeats, save superannuated politicians like Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) who seems mystified over how to seize the initiative from the GOP in Congress.  He is not alone.  The House leadership under Congressman Hakeem Jefferies has been shut out of all relevance in Congress.

It gets worse, however.  The far left currently has no vision for America’s future except the one that voters rebuffed at the polls.  Americans have rejected the woke agenda, burgeoning government, weaponization of the justice system, and profligate spending that is threatening the foundations of our economy and our nation’s obscene debt.

You would think that the politicians of the far left would have repaired to a quiet place to refocus and refashion a message and vision for America that, well, voters want. Donald Trump did after his 2020 defeat.  The Democrats have not in the wake of their 2024 disaster.  Why not?

First, they are a party divided and torn between those who want to change America into something most citizens do not want and the remnant of their semi-pragmatic leadership seeking to retain power.  The former are out of step.  The latter have no idea where to step next.  If they anger the progressives of their dysfunctional party, the current leaders will be defenestrated.  Schumer had a brush with being tossed to political death most recently when he merely allowed a vote on a bill the far left hated. And that bill?  Well, one that would have simply kept the government open.  Pretty radical, right?  No.  Pretty normal if you are of the mind that government is supposed to work, not shut down when one side of the aisle has a hissy fit.

Yet that is where the left has found itself.  For years they decried efforts to shutter the government. They could not conceive of any productive way to work with the other side of the aisle to continue funding the government until just 1 October, for crying aloud.  Indeed, that legislative vote was merely an extension of the budget agreement the far left agreed to just five months ago under the former administration!

In all honesty, it is not my purpose to suggest to the far left how to comport themselves.  My worldview and theirs are as different as chalk and cheese.  I do not want the America they envision.  And they don’t want the one that I wish to conserve. Nor do I expect to win many of them to my point of view.  But here’s what I do expect. That they become the loyal opposition when they are not in the majority.

As a conservative, my preferred party has not had a sterling record in the loyal opposition category in recent years.  The GOP has had its fair share of obstruction and obstinance.  Nonetheless, for our system to work, the ones who lose an election do not have the luxury to squat down in the middle of the road, suck their thumbs, and reflexively oppose the work of the party that won in the most recent contest.  Our system expects more adherence to the common good than that.

So, what are we getting today?  We have been treated to politicians standing in front of government agencies acting like petulant teenagers engaged in a food fight. Vulgar language dominates their rhetoric.  Obnoxious behavior is the way they have decided to express themselves before a national audience, even remaining seated and silent as mothers who have lost their children at the hands of illegal aliens were respectfully recognized before a joint session of Congress.  And we have been subjected to the far left’s allies in the judiciary as they engage in a highly partisan manner to literally stop every action the President seeks to implement.  Having lost the election, they have decided to stage a judicial coup d’état.

Indeed, the political class of the far left has exhibited a behavior their acolytes in the general population is now emulating.  If you have a Tesla, you can be sure it has become a target for marauding radical leftists.  If you’re a Jew on a campus headed to class, you will be vilified.  If you—heaven forbid—wear a MAGA hat, you will be assaulted on the street.

That’s what happens when far left politicians decide to become far less.
